Mike Ferjak is a retired veteran law enforcement officer with 40 years of law enforcement and investigative experience. He was recruited by the Iowa Department of Justice in 1998 as a criminal investigator. His initial assignment was as lead investigator for the Sexually Violent Predator unit where he served for seven years, In 2004, he was placed on dual assignment to the Federal Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force in Iowa and was a member of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s (DCI) Cyber-Crime Unit. In 2011, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller selected Mike to lead the Iowa Department of Justice Human Trafficking and Prosecution Initiative. In that role he worked directly with all levels of state law enforcement agencies and federal Human Trafficking authorities, primarily the FBI and Homeland Security and the United States Attorney’s Office in the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa developing investigative capacity, victim services expertise and community awareness and professional training for law enforcement and allied professionals. In September of 2016, Mike retired from the Iowa Department of Justice. In November of 2017 he established his own firm, "I Know A Guy" Training & Consulting, LLC and now provides his services as a trainer and consultant to government and non-government agencies on the issues of child sexual exploitation, human trafficking and specialized and general investigative skill sets. He trains regulatory investigators, law enforcement officers and agents as well as non-enforcement personnel from local, state, federal and provincial agencies throughout the United States and Canada. He continues to serve with the Iowa ICAC Task Force as a trainer. Mike graduated with honors from Upper Iowa University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration with a Law Enforcement emphasis and earned his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Simpson College. Areas of concentration in his professional and technical education include highly specialized training in human trafficking, child sexual exploitation, sexual offender risk evaluation, criminal behavioral assessment and verbal and written language analysis. He has served as an adjunct faculty member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) and is an adjunct professor teaching in the Criminal Justice programs of three Iowa Colleges and Universities. He is an invited guest lecturer at the Drake University Law School, Iowa State University and Simpson College on the topics of human trafficking, sexual violence and related law enforcement issues. He is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions including the Chrysalis Foundation’s “Guardian” Award, the Iowa Governor's Golden Dome Award and the National Commission on Enforcement and Regulation’s Distinguished Service Award for his work as a national trainer and consultant. Mike has testified as an expert witness on human trafficking before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary, the Iowa Legislature and in various other venues across the country. He is a retired career military officer with 27 years of service in the United States Army active and reserve forces including three tours of duty as a commanding officer.
